Four facts that must not be mixed together
| Item | Confirmed status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| New HSK syllabus | Published November 2025; effective July 2026 | Defines the new test content and level tables. |
| HSK 3.0 Levels 1–6 trial | Held January 31, 2026 at selected centers | A limited trial, not proof that every regular date changed. |
| Regular 2026 dates | Official notice says they retain the established format until formal launch | Most candidates should follow the format on their booking. |
| Levels 7–9 | Combined advanced range in the new syllabus | Do not invent separate official vocabulary lists when the source publishes one shared range. |
Why “effective July 2026” does not answer every exam question
A syllabus describes what a test system will assess. Operational rollout determines which test centers, dates and candidates use it. Those can move on different schedules. This is why HSK Atlas records both the syllabus date and the current official trial notice instead of replacing one with the other.
For a candidate, the decisive evidence is the booking page, admission information or a direct instruction from the test center. A blog headline, textbook cover or app label is not enough.
What is actually new in the official syllabus?
- nine levels instead of the current six-level structure;
- 11,000 unified vocabulary headwords across Levels 1–9;
- 3,088 recognition-character records;
- separate handwriting-character expectations;
- tasks, topics, grammar and language-skill descriptions by level;
- a shared advanced vocabulary range for Levels 7–9.
These learner-facing vocabulary figures use HSK Atlas unified headwords from the official new syllabus. Counting method details are documented on the Sources page.

A practical decision tree
- Do you have a booked test? Follow the version and format shown there.
- Does the booking explicitly say HSK 3.0? Use the new syllabus and center instructions.
- Does it only say HSK 1–6? Use the current HSK test and level pages unless the center confirms otherwise.
- No exam date yet? Study with the resources you can sustain, then compare your vocabulary against the new target.
How HSK Atlas labels the two systems
On HSK Atlas, HSK means the established six-level exam. It lives at /hsk/ and the level hubs use/hsk-1/ through /hsk-6/.
HSK 3.0 means the official new syllabus and lives at/hsk3.0/. This avoids forcing every beginner to understand internal version names before finding HSK 1.
What to monitor next
- formal launch announcements from the official exam authorities;
- changes to individual registration pages and test-center instructions;
- official sample papers and scoring details for each level;
- whether regular dates begin explicitly identifying HSK 3.0.
